REVIEW #4 – Jane and the Genius of the Place
This Jane Austen mystery was just chock a block full of stuff. There’s murder, there’s politics, there’s landscape design theory, there’s art, there’s fashion and there’s the fashionable. And of course, at the center, there’s Jane.
This book takes place at an interesting time in Jane’s life. She’s living in a place she adores and it feeds her creative soul, her genius, if you will. She’s moving in fashionable circles, wearing lovely, if borrowed clothes, and living life to the fullest with the knowledge that it won’t last.
And then there’s murder. But while this is a Stephanie Barron “Jane Austen mystery”, we don’t see Jane following people around at night or questioning people as we have in previous books. In this volume, she serves more as a sounding board for her brother, who is no slouch in the detecting field himself. It’s a bit different in that regard, but that’s not a bad thing. As a fan, I found it fascinating to watch how she thinks and puzzles things out.
