REVIEW #9 — Jane and the Barque of Frailty
While Jane is in London, preparing Sense and Sensibility for publication, murder happens, very nearly on her doorstep.
This is a wonderful mystery. Jane must solve it in a very short time so she does all sorts of things that a lady of society just wouldn’t do. It’s great fun!
I found Eliza Austen annoying in this one. In previous outings, she’s been outrageous and entertaining. In this book, I thought she was whiny and frivolous. It’s probably a good thing that in real life she died before Henry lost his money and had to become a clergyman. I really can’t picture Eliza as a clergyman’s wife tucked away in the country.
The story has twists and turns and politics and scandalous gossip and all the things that make life in Town so exciting. I’m afraid Jane is going to be terribly bored when she goes back to Chawton.
